You really should see these - Day 3: Road movies


Ultima puntata del You really should see these, dedicata interamente ai road movies. Non mi sono però limitato ai road movies classici e ho compilato una lunga lista di film in cui il viaggio è uno degli aspetti più importanti.
Conta il concetto di viaggio (o di fuga) e non di arrivo, quindi. La meta importa solo fino a un certo punto: può anche non esserci oppure corrispondere al luogo da cui si è partiti.
Non è un genere ben definito e i sette titoli che ho scelto, tranne qualche piccola eccezione, sono diversissimi fra loro, ma ho voluto fare una classifica un po' diversa e si è pure rivelata un'ottima occasione per mettere due o tre dei miei film preferiti. Spero che rientri comunque nelle regole scritte da Elio, che come al solito riporto anche qui:

1) Essendo difficile scegliere un unico genere o filone cinematografico, non lo si farà. Se ne possono scegliere 3, ed ogni giorno sarà dedicato ad un genere diverso.
2) Ogni classifica dovrà contare solo ed esclusivamente 7 pellicole.
3) Il genere dovrà essere introdotto, brevemente o meno, e le scelte dovranno essere giustificate, sì da rendere ulteriormente utili le singole classifiche.

Chiunque dovesse decidere di farlo, oltre a rispettare le regole appena scritte, dovrà semplicemente riportare l'identificativa e fantastica immagine ad inizio post.




7. Punto Zero (Richard C. Sarafian, 1971)
Il lungo ed allucinato viaggio di Kowalski, che deve partire da Denver per andare a consegnare una macchina a S. Francisco e che per una scommessa col suo spacciatore decide di affrettare i tempi imponendosi un tempo limite praticamente impossibile da rispettare. A seguire la sua folle corsa, un dj che ne incoraggia la fuga dalle forze dell'ordine e il cui studio verrà poi assalito dalla polizia e da alcuni “manifestanti”. Accolto non troppo positivamente dalla critica, col passare degli anni è diventato un citatissimo cult movie, da Tarantino in Death Proof ai Primal Scream che gli dedicano un intero album.



6. Into the Wild (Sean Penn, 2007)
Di nuovo una fuga. Dallo stesso “nemico”, si potrebbe dire. Ma se Kowalski, per andarsene da un modo di vivere che non lo soddisfa, decide di montare in sella alla sua Challenger, McCandless sceglie il percorso inverso. Si libera della maggior parte dei beni di consumo che possiede, scappa da un futuro che gli avrebbe garantito soldi e vita facile, abbandona gli affetti e comincia il suo viaggio con un'unica idea in testa: allontanarsi il più possibile da una società fatta di obblighi e convenzioni avvicinandosi alla Natura e ad un modo di vivere più libero ed appagante.
Penn, pur non giudicando il protagonista, è comunque bravo nell'insistere sui motivi che lo hanno portato al totale abbandono di un'esistenza programmata a priori.



5. Valhalla Rising (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2009)
Tempi dilatati, abbandono quasi totale dei dialoghi. L'Uomo si allontana dalla Natura con la pretesa che la religione possa fornire risposte che non esistono.
Da qui nasce lo smarrimento che assale chiunque creda che attraverso un presunto dio sia possibile elevarsi al di sopra degli altri e imporre una visione gerarchica della vita. Questo smarrimento si tramuterà in follia e infine in cieca violenza. Alla fine del lungo viaggio, l'unico a trovare se stesso sarà proprio One-Eye, il guerriero muto in cerca del Valhalla.



4. Cinque pezzi facili (Bob Rafelson, 1970)
Dupea, dopo aver rinnegato le sue origini borghesi, trova lavoro come operaio in California. Ma la ripetitività di questa sua nuova vita incomincia a stancarlo e sente il bisogno di andarsene nuovamente, abbandonando amori e amicizie.
Terzo film della classifica in cui il viaggiare si rivela come una fuga in piena regola; un ribellarsi ad un qualcosa di non ben definito che soffoca e rattrista, e da cui si sente quindi il bisogno di scappare. Nicholson eccezionale.



3. Stranger than paradise (Jim Jarmusch, 1984)
Eva arriva a Cleveland dall'Ungheria e suo cugino Willie è costretto ad ospitarla per una decina di giorni, il tempo necessario affinché la zia di lei venga dimessa dall'ospedale.
Uno dei pochi road movies in cui i personaggi non subiscono cambiamenti. Si viaggia svogliatamente, quasi per inerzia, un po' per piacere e un po' perché non c'è fondamentalmente nulla di meglio da fare. Eppure si scherza, si ride e ci si innamora pure, ascoltando I Put A Spell on You di Screamin' Jay Hawkins lungo le strade deserte delle periferie americane. Ma Jarmusch, come al solito, rimane in bilico fra l'ironia ed un'inevitabile malinconia di fondo.



2. Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979)
Me ne rendo conto: il film di Coppola, in questa classifica, sembra un po' un intruso. Ma il viaggio, in questo caso, conta ben più di un conflitto che viene affrontato solo in parte e mai in modo troppo insistito. Ovviamente le intenzioni erano quelle di parlare del Vietnam, ma Coppola sceglie di farlo attraverso la follia che, come una malattia, si impossessa dei soldati, limitando le scene di battaglia e aggiungendo un personaggio (Kurtz) in grado di rappresentare in modo perfetto “l'orrore” ricercato dal regista.
Una lunga ed ipnotica avventura – questa volta con una meta – che si rivelerà ben più complicata del previsto.



1. Pierrot le fou (Jean-Luc Godard, 1965)
Giudicato scandaloso da benpensanti e conservatori dell'epoca, fu addirittura vietato ai minori di 18 anni. Il motivo ufficiale: “un anarchisme intellectuel et moral” (un anarchismo intellettuale e morale). Pierrot e Marianne, delinquenti, scappano dalle apparenze e dall'ipocrisia di quella che Belmondo definisce la “civiltà dei culi” e iniziano un lungo viaggio senza meta, logica o regole attraverso la Francia.
Probabilmente uno dei film più rivoluzionari della già di per sé rivoluzionaria Nouvelle Vague. Sia per la messa in scena che per i contenuti. Godard critica consumismo (quello della “società dei culi” di cui sopra), capitalismo, politiche imperialiste, produzione di armi e tutto quanto possa opporsi allo spirito libertario dei due innamorati in fuga, che continueranno a viaggiare e cantare senza una meta precisa, fino alla fine.

  1. Presenza perfetta quella di Cinque pezzi facili, approvo in pieno. Sicuramente uno dei miei film preferiti, di conseguenza anche tra i road movies preferiti... e che road movies!!! molto particolare la caratteristica del viaggio. Jack Nicholson stratosferico!

  3. Insomma, hai fatto della varietà nelle scelte l'elemento preponderante di queste classifiche. E meno male, perché ne hai tirate fuori 3 assi interessanti, che mi hanno tra l'altro permesso di segnarmi un po' di pellicole. Anche questa volta (punto zero, tipo, non l'ho visto ma mi incuriosisce parecchio).

    Pierrot le fou recuperalo assolutamente, anche perché, se non ricordo male, À bout de souffle ti era piaciuto molto e questo secondo me ti piacerà ancora di più. :)

    metterne solo sette lascia fuori un bel po' di grandi lavori: Una storia vera, Un tranquillo weekend di paura, Fratello dove sei?, Aguirre, Walkabout e millemila altri, ma vabbé, intanto son contento perché al primo posto hai messo quella bomba incompresa di Pierrot le Fou e questo mi basta e avanza :D
