Un giovane violoncellista decide di lasciare Tokyo in seguito allo scioglimento dell'orchestra in cui suonava. Venduto lo strumento, torna nel suo paese natale insieme alla fidanzata. In cerca di lavoro, si troverà ad accettare un impiego presso un'agenzia di cerimonie funebri.
Commedia drammatica che affronta il tema della morte in modo delicato e toccante, lasciando anche spazio a una certa ironia. Tutti gli elementi della sceneggiatura sono dosati con cura e sempre funzionali allo svolgimento di una trama priva di inutili forzature. Il film è profondo proprio grazie al fatto che non si prende sul serio.
il prendersi troppo sul serio è un difetto dilagante, purtroppo....
